Heathcote was founded on the dicovery of gold in the 1880s and grew on a thriving timber industry throughout the early 1900s. Today it is a busy rural centre at the hub of a wide rural area. Heathcote is just 90 minutes from Melbourne nestled at the foot of the McIvor Ranges, with a giant box-ironbark forest on its outskirts. Its population expands during the summer as large numbers of people descend on nearby Lake Eppalock, with Heathcote the nearest major town.
