Profile
Castlemaine, the heart of the Victorian Midlands, reaps the benefits of high yielding surrounds. The rich land flanking Castlemaine lends itself to a wide variety of industries. To the north lies Harcourt, one of Australia's major apple producers and exporters. Pears, cherries, tomatoes  and wine grapes are also successfully grown in this area. On the other side of Castlemaine are the rich river flat soils of the Newstead/Guildford area providing ideal dairying land and beautiful state forests. The east features large private holdings concentrating on pastoral activities where beef and sheep are among the chief interests, while Maldon area is noted for vast cereal crops. In the city itself there are large engineering works, woollen mills and bacon factory, with smaller but prosperous industries creating a wide diversity.
