Heathcote was founded on the dicovery of gold in the 1880s and grew on a thriving timber industry throughout the early 1900s. Today it is a busy rural centre at the hub of a wide rural area. Heathcote is just 90 minutes from Melbourne nestled at the foot of the McIvor Ranges, with a giant box-ironbark forest on its outskirts. Its population expands during the summer as large numbers of people descend on nearby Lake Eppalock, with Heathcote the nearest major town.
The Heathcote McIvor Times is the traditional newspaper in the Heathcote district, selling both in the township and as far away as Axedale, Bendigo, Colbinabbin, Eaglehawk, Elmore, Goornong, Heathcote, Huntly, Kilmore, Outlying areas, Pyalong, Redesdale, Subscriptions, Tooborac and Toolleen.
