Profile
The Golden Plains Miner is sandwiched between Ballarat and Geelong in the Golden Plains Shire, which is the third fastest growing Shire in country Victoria. Ballarat has in the vicinity of 6,500 major industries and Geelong would double that number. The Golden Plains population in 2006 is at 16,800 with Bannockburn being the major town within the Shire and Smythesdale, Inverleigh and Meredith a close runner-up. Bannockburn is going through a building boom, not only in the population but in retail and industry. In 2006-8 the town will have an estimated subdivision of 2,500 new blocks of land for dwellings and new business subdivision at the Bannockburn business estate. Smythesdale, likewise, is going through the same development stage and will shortly have sewerage put through, which will make it more inviting for people to move to the small town. Bannockburn will be a far more inviting place to live in when the new Geelong Bypass is built, which will be just on the outskirts of the town itself. Melbourne traviling time from Bannockburn is estimated to take only 40 minutes. At the present time Geelong is only 15 minutes to the shopping centre from Bannockburn. The whole of the Shire will be a very pleasant place to live in if one desires rural living and under one hour traveling to three cities - Geelong, Ballarat and Melbourne.

Industries
The main Industries at present, in the shire, are in the rural sector such as farms so companies like Elders, Landmark and the like are very active. We also have Industrial Steel manufacturing and many wineries scattered throughout the shire, we would also be the biggest poultry growers in Victoria as well as pigs. We also have gold mines that are working such as Ballarat Goldfield in Berringa. And a rail line, which goes from the East to West and North to South, one goes through the town of Inverleigh and the other right through Bannockburn. For the Tourist we have the great rail (now walking) trail in the north Linton-Smythesdale and great Historical societies throughout the whole of the Plains.
