The Whitsunday Shire includes the famous Whitsunday Islands, and mainland tourist resort areas of Airlie Beach, Laguna Quays and the Conway National Park. The area's primary industries include sugar (the Proserpine Mill expects to process approximately 2,000,000 tonnes annually), beef cattle, and the area also supports two sawmills, one of which exports to Japan. The area boasts two airports of Boeing 767 standard (Proserpine and Hamilton Island) and a third, Shute Harbour, used exclusively for local tourism reef flights, sky diving, parachuting etc. Two towns serve the area: Proserpine, on the Number 1 Highway and the main Brisbane-Cairns rail line, and Airlie, the main tourism area on the coast.
